The Sim Swap attacks began after Ledger’s database leak, now that the hackers hold all the personal information of around 270,000 users.
Scammers are now sending apology messages on Ledger’s behalf, hoodwinking users into installing the “latest version”.
Hackers sent malicious links into conning users to “Download the latest version” with a convincing letter. One Ledger user fell into the trap and lost $4,000 because of a modified metatask extension.
Below is a screenshot from a Twitter user who received the message from the hackers. People all over Twitter are alarmed at how compelling and convincing the message is, notwithstanding a small spell error at the end.
However, the outrage is even greater because the affected users have reported that Ledger hasn’t commented nor provided assistance of any kind on these messages.
A Reddit user named u/goldcakes reported receiving numerous death threats in his ledger.
At least a million users have been exposed on Raidforum since the attacks on Ledger began. The staff says that the attack only leaked the personal data of 9,000 users. The company ignored the issue saying it was “old data.”
Now it seems that the 9,000 users became 270,000 people which have all their info in the hands of cyber-thieves, and are exposed to those types of messages. Furthermore, Ledger can be in serious trouble if affected users create legal action, which might happen shortly.
