BTC Markets mistakenly exposed its customers’ contact information today while attempting to send out a message through email.
Explaining how the incident occurred, the cryptocurrency exchange showed their remorse for the data breach. To that extent, BTC Markets says it’s ready to self-report the development to the Office of Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).
Users’ Contact Information Got Exposed
As the crypto exchange explained, it sends out messages to the customers through email using an external system. BTC Markets first ran test emails in the system before proceeding with the actual news. The method had been working correctly for the exchange for several years now, until the malfunction that happened. The exchange elaborated:
“However, today, our testing didn’t pick up that the sample email addresses in the batch were added to the same email, rather than sent individually. In this case, the batch sizes were under 1,000 email addresses.”
BTC Markets stated that it was impossible to prevent the error when realized for the whole process was quick. Therefore, the contact details, like users’ names and email addresses, have been exposed in the messages.
“This is a deeply regrettable situation, and we apologize wholeheartedly for it,” the exchange writes, also mentioning that the security of its users is essential for them.
BTC Markets Self-reports to OAIC
Temporarily, BTC Markets stated that it would self-report the incident to the OAIC and comply with whatever the requirements will be for data breach reporting. To secure the users’ adequate safety, the exchange will also undergo an internal review to tighten up the data security.
BTC Markets also assured that they are unaffected and secured. “Our external communication process has no interaction with our internal system, and no password data was exposed.”
