Did Bitcoin Financed Pro-Trump Capitol Riot?

A French donor paid over $500,000 in Bitcoin to “far-right activists and internet personalities” who have taken part in the pro-Trump DC riot last week, Chainalysis stated.

Bitcoin might have played a vital role in financing the Capitol’s riot last January 6, new research from blockchain data company Chainalysis showed.

In the days since numerous violent Trump supporters made their way into the seat of government, new information has emerged speculating that the riot was planned.

Now, Chainalysis reports that last December 8, a donor had sent 28.15 BTC, or around approximately $522,000 by the time it was transferred, to 22 different addresses, many of them belonging to “far-right activists and internet personalities” who have been present at the Capitol.

While the nationalist Nick Fuentes – was was at the capitol at the time of the riot – was among the recipients, and also the white supremacist publisher Daily Stormer.

According to the report, the free speech-oriented platform that has received criticism for being a safe space for hate speech, Gab, also received some Bitcoin.

Federal intelligence agencies and law enforcement are now investigating the source of funds, which the research firm assumed came from a “now-deceased computer programmer based in France.”

The firm also dug up a handle connected with the Bitcoin address: pankkake.

Chainalysis’ report post pointed to a suicide note from the French donor, dated last December 9 – the day after the Bitcoin has been transferred. “Western civilization is declining,” the note allegedly stated, before explaining why he transferred the Bitcoin.

“I care about what happens after my death,” he wrote. “That’s why I decided to leave my modest wealth to certain causes and people.”
