Alipay testing the waters with ‘Digital Yuan’

China’s payment giant Alipay provides limited users to use its digital yuan after publishing a link between its app and digital yuan e-wallets.

Alipay mobile payment platform, which Ant Group owns, announced the trial would allow some users to utilize digital yuan through its service. Presumed to be a vital part of the developing digital currency ecosystem throughout the middle kingdom.

MYbank association help made the shift made feasible. The bank is one of the leading internet-only banks in China – not surprisingly is also majority-owned by Ant Group.

In a statement quoted by CNBC on its association in the next stage of the digital yuan pilot project; Ant Group announced it would continue to operate adjacent to the industry and state powers to aid in developing the digital currency.

“As one of the participants in the trial of the e-CNY, Ant Group’s associate MYbank will steadily advance the trial pursuant to the overall arrangement of the People’s Bank of China. Ant Group, together with MYbank, will also continue to support the research, development and trial of PBOC’s e-CNY.”

Ant Group has been working jointly with the country’s central bank to improve the digital currency and its foundation for already couple of years.

The firm’s app development support has already established several different digital yuan-related apps; with Mybank massively dedicated to supporting the roll-out of the currency.

Rivals WeBank is also involved in developing the digital currency ecosystem in the whole middle kingdom. However, it has yet to offer its version of a fiat bridge to the digital yuan.

The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) has worked on trials for the digital yuan; includes airdrop programs and localized city trial schemes. Targeting retail, shopping festivals, and other everyday scenarios to accept digital payments.

With China’s full-speed approach with its Digital Yuan pilot; it won’t take long before the digital currency is fully established in the middle kingdom; even before every other country even complete their own.
