Stolen Bitcoin has been Moving, Again!

Around $100M worth of BTC stolen from the 2016 Bitfinex hack just moved from “sleeping” wallets.

The hackers that made this transfer stole around 120,000 BTC from Bitfinex in August 2016. By that time, the exchange lost $72M in the hack.

At 2 PM ET last November 30, Over 5,000 BTC was moved from 14 wallets. The 5045.58 coins hadn’t moved ever since the 2016 hack. The value of those funds is around $100M at Bitcoin’s current price. The Bitfinex exchange was hacked in 2016 after a problem with its multi-signature wallets. Now the stolen bitcoin is worth over $2.3B.

According to the website of WhaleAlert, the transfer has been carried out over 14 transactions having less than 500 BTC each. It is unknown where the funds have been sent, but the movement seemed to be a part of an attempt to cash out the stolen coins.

This is not the first time that some of the Bitcoin pinched in the 2016 hack has been moved. Last August, around $5.6M stolen coins have been transferred. It keeps on happening. This move is known as the “awakening.”

The mentioned bitcoin is often from the “Satoshi-era” it means that the coins were mined when Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, was still involved in the crypto world. But the formerly sleeping bitcoin moved today has an even sadder history behind it: The cryptocurrency that was stolen in the hack hasn’t been recovered yet. Bitfinex had offered up to $400M as a reward for someone who can contact the hackers.
